Below: This model, set up in a tunnel along the excavated western retaining wall of the Temple Mount today, shows the whole Temple Mount as it would have been in the 1st Century. When Herod the Great had the site rebuilt, he included a 'portico' (on the left of the picture) for his own use. The actual Temple is the white building in the centre of the mount; we are looking at the back of the Temple, the end where the Holy of Holies was. The Holy of Holies housed the Ark of the Covenant, a large 'box' which contained the tablets of stone on which Moses wrote the ten commandments.
