The Gospel of Luke states that the two disciples are walking on a road to Emmaus, a village said to be 7 miles from Jerusalem. The most likely location of Emmaus is the ancient city ‘Emmaus Nicopolis’, (later known as Amwas/Imwas) 20 miles west of Jerusalem. Emmaus was on the main road to Jerusalem, and served as an administrative, military and economic centre.
